From Placement to Permanent: Dan’s Journey on Steps to Work
When Dan joined the Steps to Work programme at Strawberry Field, he brought with him a clear interest in travel and tourism, along with a strong motivation to build a career in a customer-facing role. Like many trainees on the programme, he was looking for an opportunity to gain practical experience, grow in confidence and take meaningful steps toward employment.
Through the programme, Dan secured a placement as a Guest Services Assistant at a major city centre retail and leisure destination. From the outset, he approached the role with enthusiasm and professionalism, quickly becoming a valued member of the team.
During his placement, Dan developed key workplace skills, including communication, problem-solving and customer service. He played an active role in welcoming visitors, responding to guest queries and helping create a positive experience for those exploring the city. His natural warmth and growing confidence enabled him to make a strong and lasting impression on both visitors and colleagues.
The support provided through Steps to Work, combining real-world experience with ongoing coaching and guidance allowed Dan to build not only his skills, but also his self-belief. As his placement progressed, it became clear that he was ready for the next step.
With the encouragement of the team and through a strong partnership with the placement provider, Dan applied for a permanent position whilst on placement and successfully secured the role of Guest Services Assistant. Dan will be the first point of contact for Liverpool visitors and customers and can't wait to tell them his story. Dan’s journey highlights the impact meaningful placements and employer partnerships in helping individuals move into sustained employment. What began as a placement opportunity has now become a sustainable career pathway.
Dan said he particularly enjoyed meeting new people every day and being able to represent the city he’s proud of, describing the experience as a major step forward in his confidence and independence.
We are incredibly proud of what Dan has achieved. His journey is a great example of how the right support, combined with determination and opportunity, can lead to lasting success.
