New art installation on display at Strawberry Field

A new artwork, 'The Catch', has been installed in the Strawberry Field Prayer Room. Created by artist Marilyn Chester, the piece brings together elements that reflect the thoughts and prayers shared by visitors to Strawberry Field.

At the centre of the installation is a collection of prayer tags left behind over time. Each tag represents a personal message: hopes, challenges, or moments of reflection. These tags are held within layers of fishing nets, along with natural objects such as shells, driftwood, stones and small fish. Marilyn gathered these materials from her local beach, choosing them for their simplicity and the way they connect to themes of life’s journey and the passing of time.

Ropes hang from the top of the structure, suggesting ideas of support, safety and being held, which reflect the role Strawberry Field plays for many people. A red net, symbolising Strawberry Field, is placed across the surface to connect the piece back to the site’s identity and history as a place of welcome. Together, these elements create an installation that brings together the everyday objects of the shoreline with the personal messages of visitors.

Marilyn said, “Strawberry Field continues to welcome people from all over the world. Just as it did in the past, it remains a sanctuary, both inside the building and throughout the gardens. It’s a supportive space that cares for people’s hearts and minds and this installation reflects that spirit. The net holds objects from the shoreline, but also the heartfelt words and hopes of everyone who takes a moment to pause and reflect.”

'The Catch' is on display in the Strawberry Field prayer room and is free for visitors to come and view.
