Building Teamwork Through Work Readiness
Building strong teamwork skills is one of the most important steps in preparing for employment, which is why it plays a central role in our Work Readiness Course within the Steps to Work programme.
One of the most effective ways to build these skills is through simple, engaging activities. Tasks such as completing jigsaw puzzles may seem straightforward, but they naturally encourage communication, patience and kindness. Participants must talk to one another, share ideas and support each other to achieve a common goal; key behaviours expected in any workplace.
These activities also help to highlight individual strengths. Natural leadership, coaching ability and active listening skills often emerge in a relaxed environment, giving participants the opportunity to recognise their own potential as well as appreciate the strengths of others.
For many individuals, particularly those who experience barriers in social situations, these group tasks provide a safe and supportive way to interact with peers. The informal setting reduces pressure while still promoting meaningful collaboration and connection.
Introducing an element of friendly competition adds another layer of learning. Not every team will finish first and not every task will be completed at the same pace. This helps reinforce an important message: success is not always about speed or winning, but about perseverance. By staying focused and working together, participants can still achieve what they set out to do.
These experiences directly translate into the workplace, where teamwork is an essential expectation. Employers value individuals who can communicate effectively, support colleagues, and remain resilient when challenges arise. By embedding these skills early on, the Steps to Work programme helps participants build confidence and develop the behaviours needed to succeed in a professional environment.
