Why meaningful work matters for mental health
This Mental Health Awareness Week, Steps to Work is highlighting how being in work can have a positive impact on our mental wellbeing.
Having a job isn’t always just about the payslip (although that definitely helps!). It’s about structure, purpose, connection and confidence. Whether it’s a chat with colleagues, that feeling of accomplishment when you tick something off your to-do list, or feeling proud of learning a new skill, work can give us that confidence boost we sometimes need.

But we know it’s not always easy. Challenges such as learning difficulties, neurodiversity, mental health issues, or limited support networks can make entering the world of work feel overwhelming. These barriers can lead to feelings of isolation, low confidence, and anxiety - all of which can affect mental health. That’s why our programme aims to support trainees every step of the way. From the confidence-building 'Work Readiness' course, helping with CVs, interviews and job searching, we offer support designed to help you feel ready, empowered, and well enough to take that next step.
This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re reminded that access to meaningful work can play a big role in improving mental health. With the right support, every young person can take that first step towards a brighter, healthier future. If you could do with some support, get in touch with the Steps to Work team.
